Sleep inside the heritage
A classified manor on the main square
Photograph

The flagship, and the one where the place is part of the point. Casa Amarela is a classified historic house (Imóvel de Interesse Público — to confirm), known locally as Casa Magessi, unmistakable for its ochre-yellow front and ornate Rocaille façade on the main square, Praça D. Pedro V, opposite the church of São João Baptista. Carefully rebuilt to its original form and run as a Turismo de Habitação, it's the house for travellers who want the medieval town and the birds in equal measure.
Why it suits birders
You wake in the centre of town, so the doorstep birding starts at the door — swifts screaming over the very square, White Storks on the roofs nearby, and a Black Redstart in the old stone. The balconies look out toward the Serra de São Mamede, so you can read the morning's weather over the ridges before you set off. (View / balcony — to confirm.) And it threads the site's whole idea into your stay — to sleep in the monument is to sleep inside the very stonework the birds have made their own.
